The website has been established to supply information on organizations and industries conducting research on biomass energy in Japan, as reference material for East Asian countries to investigate joint research, training, and surveys on research and projects related to biomass energy research appropriate to the situation in each country.

Database of Biomass Research Organizations in Japan was established in 2007 by the New Energy Foundation (NEF) to assist Promotion of the Introduction of Biomass Energy in East Asia, a project under the Initiative on Energy Cooperation announced by the Japanese government in connection with the Cebu Declaration on East Asian Energy Security adopted at the Second East Asia Summit.
